GDUI's Special Needs Committee assists guide dog handlers or prospective handlers who have other disabilities in addition to blindness. GDUI's membership includes guide dog handlers who are deaf-blind as well as individuals with severe arthritis, difficulties with balance and other specialized mobility needs.
Through this committee, people may share training and equipment modification ideas and inform potential guide dog handlers of programs offering specialized training for individuals with their particular secondary disabilities.
The Special Needs Committee also assists in making GDUI publications and Convention activities accessible to members with multiple disabilities. Such assistance has included locating sign language interpreters for deaf-blind members attending Convention sessions, transcription of some recorded materials into Braille and assisting members with limited mobility in making necessary special arrangements with convention hotels.
To find out more about this committee or its services, please contact the Special Needs Committee chair.
