Subscription Information
PAWTRACKS is the official publication of Guide dog Users, Inc., published quarterly with the first issue each year being the Spring issue. The magazine is free with any membership to GDUI. Stand-alone subscriptions are also availabel for $25.00 per year for those who may not wish affiliation with GDUI, but who want to stay in touch with the guide dog community news. PAWTRACKS is an audio magazine, meaning that it is available only in an audio format such as cassette tape or compact disk. What makes this magazine unique is that it captures the essence of our membership, purpose and activities through the varying sounds of those involved in our organization.
PAWTRACKS is a major source of information within the guide dog community. the magazine contains editorials, interviews, convention programs from both our national organization and our many affiliates, and news from the guide dog schools. Music and poetry from our members also add to the richness of the publication.
The magazine is produced in a 4-track, 15/16 inches per second, Library of Congress format, and requires a modified player. In 2003, the publication will also be available on 4 compact disks per issue, playable on any commercial cd player or computer with a cd drive. Because PAWTRACKS is sent to blind and visually impaired members using the "Free Matter for the Blind" designation, we do not accept advertising. the magazine is supported through the dues of our members and generous contributions. It costs approximately $8,800 per year to produce 4 issues of the magazine on cassette tape for our over 1200 subscribers. As always, contributions are welcome toward the production and distribution of PAWTRACKS.
GDUI does provide a transcribed copy of the magazine in braille or large print for our deaf/blind members upon request. volunteers transcribe each issue by hand so that our deaf/blind members may enjoy the full benefit of the publication.
The Editor of PAWTRACKS is a volunteer. The Editor is appointed for a two-year term with no term limits by the GDUI President and serves as an ex officio, non-voting member of the GDUI Board, representing the interests of the press.
three people have served as PAWTRACKS Editor over the publication's 28 years. Evelyn Larson was the first editor from 1974 through 1991. She produced both tape and braille copies of PAWTRACKS in the 1970's, then exclusively cassette editions throughout the 1980's. Evelyn began the standard of airing national affiliate convention presentations in PAWTRACKS, bringing those who could not attend such functions the valuable information.
In 1991, Kim charlson was appointed PAWTRACKS Editor. Kim oversaw the largest growth in subscriptions to the magazine in its history as the membership of GDUI increased from approximately 200 in 1991 to over 1,100 in 2002. Kim incorporated the "Affiliate News Roundup" column to feature GDUI's Affiliate Coordinator and selections from affiliate newsletters and convention programs. She also featured a number of guide dog related songs and poetry sent in by members at the end of each publication.
In September, 2002, Kim charlson stepped aside as Editor due to her growing job responsibilities with the Massachusetts Regional Library for the Blind. GDUI President Debbie Grubb appointed Jenine Stanley to assume the position of Editor for the next two years. Jenine has produced one issue of the magazine, Fall 2002, and has produced the convention coverage from the 2002 national convention. She is overseeing the production of PAWTRACKS on compact disk. Jenine works primarily with digital media for editing the magazine.
Kim Charlson will remain a part of the PAWTRACKS Editorial Staff as Editor Emeritus. She will assist Jenine in locating material for the magazine, reading articles and policy issues. She will also serve as PAWTRACKS representative to the GDUI Board until Jenine's term as Immediate Past President expires in 2004.
The most recently published issue of PAWTRACKS isSpring, 2003. The spring issue is always the first issue our newest members receive. Below are the tables of contents for both the Winter 2002 and Spring 2003 issues.
